Understanding Mental Health - Mental Health First Aid

Why Mental Health First Aid Training for teachers, parents and governors?

Mental health issues and emotional problems can affect anyone, but they often
develop during adolescence and early adulthood. Half of all mental health
issues begin by age 14, and 75% develop by age 24.

The most recent NHS survey of young people’s mental health found that 17.4% of 6-19 year olds have a likely diagnosable mental health condition, which is 1 in 6 (compared to 1 in 9) in 2017.

Teaching mental health in schools is absolutely crucial to support young people to develop self-awareness, resilience and the essential life skills to confidently manage the stresses of life.

Mental Health awareness

School professionals, governors and parents all have a part to play in supporting a positive culture around mental health and wellbeing.

Teaching Youth Mental Health First Aid will allow you to:

  • Increase awareness and understand mental health.
  • Break any associated stigmas – Mental health is NOT mental illness.
  • Have increased confidence in assisting a young person in crisis.
  • Promote mental resilience and empower young people to seek help early on.

With the right support, most young people with mental health issues can recover or manage their symptoms successfully and lead full and productive lives.
